Ruby Red & Champagne: Nicole & Michael’s Maternity Story

If you’re expecting a winter baby, you might be wondering if maternity photos are even worth it when it’s cold outside. I hear this question often — and I completely understand it. But winter can actually give your photos a timeless, elegant quality that no other season can match.

Nicole and Michael recently booked a winter maternity session, and from the very start, it was clear how excited they were to capture this moment. With soft snowfall at the beginning of the session and a serene overcast sky for the rest, the natural light and snow created images that were clean, refined, and absolutely stunning.

For families in the Columbia Valley considering maternity photos in Invermere or Panorama, this session is a perfect example of why winter is not something to avoid — it’s something to embrace. The quiet, snowy environment provides a natural elegance that highlights your wardrobe, your family, and your glow in the most beautiful way.

What to Wear (And Why It’s Easier Than You Think)

With my maternity sessions, you have access to my client closet — a collection of gowns chosen specifically for maternity photography.

For Nicole’s session, she had originally selected two dresses ahead of time. I brought two additional options with me, just in case. In the end, she chose one of the dresses I had brought along, and paired it with a stunning wine-red gown she had already set her heart on.

And she looked absolutely incredible in both!

The champagne gown felt soft and refined against the snow. The red gown? Bold, elegant, unforgettable.

We always have a consultation beforehand to talk through your vision, your comfort level, and what feels most like you. And yes — outfit changes during a session are absolutely possible. Sometimes one look feels timeless and soft, and another adds depth and contrast. Winter is actually perfect for that.

You don’t need to own something special already. You just need to be open to planning intentionally.

Keeping everyone comfortable

Often parents worry about is the temperature — and ask themselves, “Will my child cooperate?”

Winter sessions can absolutely be comfortable with a little planning. There are spots where you can park nearby, warm everyone up between shots, or even have an extra family member or friend help take little ones somewhere warm for part of the session. This way, we can finish the family portion and move on to couple portraits or solo maternity portraits without anyone getting uncomfortable.

With some thoughtful layering, hand and foot warmers, and coordinating gloves or beanies, children — and parents — can be comfortable and still look beautiful in the photos. Snow can even encourage playful, genuine moments that make the session feel effortless and fun.

Let Me Take You to Nicole & Michael’s Session

We photographed their maternity session at Panorama Mountain Resort in February.

Snow covered the ground beautifully, giving us that clean, minimal backdrop that winter does so well. At the beginning of the session, the lightest snowfall drifted through — just enough to add softness to a few frames. After that, the sky stayed gently overcast, and the snow reflected the light in the most flattering way.

Nicole carried herself with such calm confidence. We captured:

  • Elegant solo portraits

  • Sweet moments with her daughter

  • Intimate images with her husband

  • The whole family together

The family coordinated in soft cream tones, which worked beautifully with the champagne gown. And when Nicole changed into the red dress, she stood out in the most striking way against the snow.

It was calm. Intentional. Connected. And the result felt timeless.

Why Winter Can Be the Most Elegant Choice

Spring has color. Summer has lakes and bright skies. Fall has golden warmth.

Winter simplifies everything.

There are no competing tones in the background. No visual noise. Just clean whites and soft texture that allow your wardrobe — and your connection — to stand out.

If your heart leans toward refined, elevated imagery, winter quietly does the work for you.
