The Vision: Dreamy - The reality: Muddy?

When Nicole first reached out about her maternity session, she had a vision: she wanted a "dreamy" photoshoot. And I was 100% on board! The only problem? It was scheduled for March 1st—right at the beginning of mud season here in the Columbia Valley. Dreamy? Maybe. Muddy? Most likely. I wasn't quite sure how we were going to pull it off, but I was determined to make it happen.

Finding the Perfect Light

Just a week before Nicole’s session, I had done a wintery photoshoot in full-blown wind, with my client rocking a stunning yellow dress that flowed like something straight out of a Hollywood movie. But Nicole’s dress was a soft taupe, delicate and feminine—a completely different vibe. And with all the snow melting rapidly, I was getting a little worried. Everything was looking, well… kind of grey and uninspiring.

But then, luck was on our side. A stretch of warm days not only melted the snow but dried up the ground just enough to give us some location options. I did some scouting, keeping my fingers crossed that I’d find the perfect spot for that dreamy look Nicole was hoping for. And guess what? I found it—by complete accident!

On the way to the planned location, with Nicole and her family following behind me, I spotted a tree with the sunlight filtering beautifully through its branches. It was glowing. I hit the brakes, hopped out, and waved them down like a crazy person. "Trust me," I said. "We have to start here!" And wow, was it worth it. The light was golden, soft, and magical—everything we needed to bring that dreamy look to life. We started shooting, and within minutes, everyone was warmed up, and the magic was happening right in front of my lens.

Riverside Beauty & Flowing Dresses

Once we had soaked up all the golden goodness at our impromptu first stop, we moved on to the riverfront location I had originally planned. And once again, the timing was chef’s kiss. The sun was in the perfect position, and we captured some incredible shots of Nicole and her little girl letting their dresses fly in the breeze. We snapped away, soaking up the stunning mountain views until the sun started its slow descent, signaling it was time for our final stop.

A Sunset Straight Out of a Fairytale

Sunset sessions have my heart. The golden light, the warm glow, the feeling of wrapping up the day in the most beautiful way possible—who wouldn’t want to twirl into the sunset in a gorgeous gown? And as I watched Nicole and her daughter standing there, their flowy dresses catching the last light of the day, I couldn’t help but think they looked straight out of Lord of the Rings. I mean, tell me that wasn’t giving full Rivendell Elf energy?! And can we take a moment to appreciate Dale? He was such a champ, helping guide his girls through poses and being so hands-on throughout the session. When dads are that involved, it makes everything flow so much easier!

A Quick Change & the Client Closet Perk

Nicole also brought a second dress with her, and that was my cue to whip out my trusty changing tent. (Seriously, this thing is a game-changer for outdoor photoshoots!) Within minutes, she and her little girl had switched into their second outfits, and we snapped away until the very last drop of light disappeared behind the mountains.
