Why Your Kids Being Wild at Your Family Photo Session Is a Good Thing | Invermere, BC Family Photography

Updated: May 11

Yes, it might sound crazy, but it's true! I actually want your kids to show their wild side during our photo session. If your kids were scouting for family photographers in Invermere, BC, they'd likely pick me because I let them be themselves :)

Allowing your kids to be their authentic selves during the session is key to capturing genuine smiles, real emotions, and letting their unique personalities shine through.

As you already know from a previous post, I like to incorporate games into my family sessions. This post is all about embracing your kids' natural behavior.

Freedom Unleashes Personality

Here's an example of some posed smiles. They're cute, but lack that spark in the eyes and don't reveal much about the children's personality or the bond between the family members.

Now, let's give them the freedom to be themselves, to play, and be silly! Which photo do you prefer? You probably know my answer.

Once more, let's let the little boy explore a bit... and voila, another keeper for the family album!

Smiling child in a plaid shirt lies on green grass, arms stretched above, with a playful and relaxed mood.

So here's the point: It's perfectly fine if kids want to talk about gross stuff or act a little mischievous during the session because that's what they find amusing.

Let Them Be Them

At one point during the session, this little guy got distracted by a dirt pit. He was completely engrossed in playing with dirt, and his mom graciously allowed him to enjoy that moment. We ended up with some unique shots of him covered in dirt from head to toe! How many photos like that do you have in your family album?

A smiling child with a dirty face stands in a field, wearing a beige sweater and jeans. The background is blurred with earthy tones.

If we had interrupted him and asked him to pose again, he might have cried, and that would have been it. We wouldn't have captured this hilarious photo.

Here's the takeaway: I'm not advocating for kids to be hyperactive or unruly due to soda and candy. I simply want them to have the freedom to be themselves. So, if they get a bit hyper, say something silly, or have different ideas during the session, let it slide for that hour. Maybe even the hour leading up to the session to ensure everyone's in a good mood.

If someone scolds them for making a fart joke, they'll feel upset and may shut down, which is the opposite of what we want. If they get a bit rowdy, that's okay—I'll capture it so you can look back and laugh together about the time little Maddie couldn't stop saying "pooper scooper," or Ben kept making funny faces at the camera.

So...

If you want a fun, laid-back photographer who'll play games and goof around...

I'm your family photographer.

If you need someone who'll go with the flow when your kids are bursting with energy... I've got all the patience in the world!
