Hey there! Getting your pup ready for a photoshoot can feel like a big task, but trust me, it’s totally doable—and fun! I’ve been there, and with a little prep, your furry friend will be stealing the show in no time. Let’s dive into some tips to make your dog’s photoshoot paw-some!
Master Basic Commands
Okay, I know this sounds like extra work, but having your dog master (!) basic commands like sit, lay down, and stay will make everything so much smoother. It’s all about setting them up for success in those adorable group shots! Here’s how to get started:
Sit: Hold a treat near their nose and slowly move it upward. Their bottom should naturally lower to the ground. Once they sit, say “Sit” and give them that treat—easy peasy!
Lay Down: Start with your dog sitting. Take a treat, lower it to the ground, and guide them to lie down. Lots of praise when they do it right!
Stay: With your dog sitting, hold your palm up and say “Stay.” Take a small step back, then return and reward them if they’re still there. Build up the distance over time—you got this!
Extra points if you teach your dog to listen, when others (like the photographer) gives the command :)

get their attention
Ever tried getting your dog to look at the camera? It's impossible? Here’s a trick: use a sound, toy or command to grab their attention.
Training Tip: Hold a treat or toy near your face or the camera and say something like “Look” or make a fun noise (a squeeky toy works great!). Reward them when they focus and stay at their spot. Keep practicing so they’ll nail it on the big day. If you train them to focus on a toy, bring that toy to your photo session and hand it over to the photographer.
Running Towards the Camera
Want that epic action shot of your pup running straight at the camera? Oh, it’s so worth it! Here’s how to train for it:
Training Tip: Have someone hold your pup while you kneel a few steps away with a treat or toy. Call their name or use a release word like “Come!” and reward them when they dash over. Start with short distances and build up. Once they master that part, switch and have your friend or a stranger use the command to get them used to it.

let's talk drool
Because some pups bring their A-game in the slobber department. Don’t worry, there are ways to keep it under control:
Skip slobbery treats like bones or chews before the session.
Avoid their favorite ball or toy if it tends to turn on the drool faucet.
Bring a towel (trust me, it’s a lifesaver!) to dab their mouth if needed.
Practice the ‘Stay’ Command
You’ll want your pup to stay in place for those perfect solo shots. And hey, I know it takes patience, but it’s totally worth it.
Quick Practice: Start small with the “Stay” command. Keep sessions short and sweet, gradually adding time and distance. Treats and praise will keep your pup motivated!

Extra tips for success
Exercise Before the Shoot: A quick walk or playtime helps burn off extra energy. A tired pup = a chill photoshoot.
Familiarize Them with the Camera: Let them sniff the camera and hear the shutter sound so they’re not spooked.
Bring High-Value Treats: Use their absolute favorite treats to keep their attention.
Grooming: A quick brush or wipe-down can make a big difference. Check for any dirt or gunk so they look their best.

Last but not least...
Have FUN! Seriously, the most important thing is to have fun. If you’re relaxed and positive, your dog will feel it too. These tips will help your pup feel like a superstar, and you’ll end up with photos you’ll treasure forever!
